Muslims often tell the story of Islam’s early spread across cultures as driven by seemingly idyllic encounters through trade. The brutal murder of our brother George Floyd has been a painful reminder that Muslim-run businesses in Black neighborhoods too often become the sites of state violence and racist encounters, even if the business has a mosque in the basement. As Muslim communities mourn and protest this horrific injustice with millions across the country, some Muslims have been embroiled in intra-Muslim community debates about how to assign blame and responsibility and how to define risk, safety, and protection from harm beyond police intervention. This panel will be the first in a series of community conversations sponsored by MuslimARC and its partners on how to heal, build and protect our communities and includes anti-racist Muslim community organizers and activists, business owners, scholars, and religious leaders who live and/or work in Black neighborhoods. and who will offer personal reflections on how to strengthen community ties in this time of crisis.
